Mat Mania, also known as Exciting Hour in Japan, was an arcade wrestling game released by Technos in 1985. It marked a leap forward in presentation, featuring large, detailed sprites, animated crowds, and arenas that looked closer to televised wrestling. The game emphasized one-on-one matches, pitting players against a roster of flamboyant opponents with distinct personalities, including the villainous Insane Warrior and the clownish Coco Savage.
Gameplay blended grappling, strikes, and slams with simple but satisfying controls. Players could throw opponents out of the ring, suplex them, or brawl with fists and kicks. Matches escalated in difficulty, requiring timing and mastery of the grappling system. Unlike earlier titles, Mat Mania successfully captured wrestling’s theatricality, with dramatic referee counts and crowd reactions.
Its biggest impact was inspiring future classics. Technos would later use its experience from Mat Mania to develop Double Dragon, borrowing both fighting mechanics and character design ideas. Though overshadowed by later games, Mat Mania is remembered for injecting personality and presentation into wrestling titles, making the sport feel larger than life in video game form.
