Game Description

Saturday Night Slam Masters (1993), developed by Capcom, merged wrestling with fighting-game DNA. Featuring character designs by legendary manga artist Tetsuo Hara (of Fist of the North Star fame), it stood out immediately with its bold, exaggerated cast. Released in arcades and later on SNES and Genesis, it introduced Western audiences to flamboyant, anime-styled wrestling.

Matches played like hybrid brawls: players could strike, grapple, climb ropes, and even fight outside the ring. The controls borrowed from Capcom’s fighting legacy, making it easy for fans of Street Fighter to adapt. Characters like Mike Haggar (from Final Fight) headlined the roster, tying Capcom’s universes together. Tag-team modes and flamboyant special attacks made it larger than life.

Critically, Slam Masters succeeded as a spectacle. It wasn’t a pure sim, but it delivered style, responsive mechanics, and a sense of bombastic fun. Its sequel, Ring of Destruction, expanded the concept, but the original remains beloved for its energy, crossover characters, and bold presentation that bridged two genres.
