Shin Nihon Pro Wrestling: Toukon Retsuden 3 (1998) was the third PlayStation entry in NJPW’s flagship series, refining 3D visuals and expanding the licensed roster to include more stars from the promotion’s red-hot late-’90s era. Featuring Hashimoto, Chono, Liger, and others, it delivered a faithful representation of New Japan’s style for home consoles.
The grappling system built on the foundation of previous entries, with smoother animations and expanded move sets. Wrestler attributes felt more distinct, allowing for style-versus-style matchups that mirrored the real product. Presentation improved with TV-style intros, authentic arenas, and commentary-style text that heightened immersion. Multiplayer remained a strong draw, with tag and singles matches replicating the drama of live events.
Though overshadowed internationally by AKI’s N64 classics, Toukon Retsuden 3 was beloved in Japan for its authenticity. It solidified NJPW’s reputation for delivering serious, simulation-style wrestling on PlayStation.
