WCW Mayhem (1999) was EA’s attempt to bring WCW’s brand to the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 with full 3D models, authentic arenas, and a wide roster of wrestlers including Goldberg, Sting, and the nWo. Notably, it was the first wrestling game to feature real WCW pay-per-view arenas and a commentary system that added broadcast flavor.
Gameplay focused on fast-paced grappling and striking, with a move system that attempted to balance accessibility with variety. Players could brawl backstage in different environments, a novelty at the time. The game also introduced a “Pay-Per-View Mode” that let fans input codes from WCW broadcasts to unlock upcoming PPV cards in-game.
While fun, Mayhem was criticized for clunky animations and lack of polish compared to AKI’s titles. Still, its presentation innovations made it memorable, and it marked an important step in EA’s brief WCW experiment.
