Game Description

All Star Pro-Wrestling (2000) was Square’s surprising entry into the genre, bringing New Japan Pro Wrestling to the PlayStation 2. It featured detailed polygonal models, authentic NJPW branding, and a presentation style that leaned heavily into realism, reflecting Square’s cinematic pedigree. Stars like Chono, Nagata, and Mutoh were faithfully recreated with accurate move sets and entrances.

Gameplay emphasized simulation over arcade action, with a slower pace and focus on grappling chains, submissions, and stamina management. The cinematic camera angles gave matches a TV-like feel, but controls were criticized as stiff and unintuitive. Despite the flaws, its authenticity and visual polish impressed fans and marked NJPW’s jump into the PS2 era.
